(b. 9 May 1858 Biebesheim, d. 4 Oct. Frankfurt/M.), grain and livestock trader.
They settled in Biebesheim where Leopold was a cattle dealer.
Their first child was stillborn or lived only a few days. Then they had 2 children.
After Leopold's death, she sold their home and went to live with her son Arthur in
Frankfurt/M., occasionally visiting her daughter Hanna in Hannover.

butcher in downtown Hanover,
son of Abraham ROSE and Golda BLOCH.
Training in German army in the field artillery 1901-1902, joined the reserves, and
was called to active duty in 1914. Served both in France and the eastern front until
end of war in 1919.
(Leopold had previously married [4.33] Johanna BLUMENTHAL (d. 1919), and had a child from that
marriage: [3.37] Paula ROSE who married [3.36] Eric RAPP.)
After the end of the war, Bernhard SPEIER and
Meta SPEIER introduced Leo ROSE to Johanna MAYERFELD.
His meat business flourished until 1933 when the Nazis came to power and denied him access to the cattle
market. In January 1939 he emigrated to the U.S.A. with his wife and son Werner ROSE due to the
efforts of Fred GOLDNER, Sr.
Leo, Hanna, Kurt and Werner ROSE lived together in Nashville for a few years. Leo
worked briefly for a meat packing company, and also had for a while the meat department in a small grocery
store.

Studied bookkeeping and public speaking at Watkins Institute Night School in Nashville.
Worked as stock clerk for Sam Levy & Co. Wholesale Shoe Co. 1937-1941,
and Bijou Amusement Co., a chain of theaters, 1941-1968.
Transferred to Meridian, MS in 1945 to manage a theater.
Went into food business until his return to Nashville where he worked in a delicatessen, sold
automobiles, was manager of an auto parts store, a frozen yogurt store and worked for
a bakery.

plant. Entered US Army in July 1943 being assigned to US Army Engineers.
Worked on both end of the Burma road, first in India and then at Kunming, China
while attached to Burma Road Engineers. Discharged in Jan. 1946 as Sergeant.
Studied and worked as portrait photographer in Washington DC.
Worked for department store as department manager, buyer and then merchandise manager.

- [4.28] Arthur MAYERFELD (b. 21 Oct. 1892 Biebesheim, d. 24 June 1952 New York City), leather worker in
Offenbach. Entered German army in 1914, promoted to sergeant. Shot in elbow on the Western Front
shortly after the outbreak of the war. After a long convalescence, he was posted to gassison duty in
Friedburg, Oberhessen where he met his first wife Ida BECKER.
He returned to the Western front in 1917 and almost immediately received severe shrapnel wounds.
After convalescence, he remained on garrison duty until the end of the war.
Arthur first married (19 Dec. 1919) [4.29] Ida BECKER (b. 3 Oct. 1889 Stammheim, d. 5 Jan. 1944
New York City)
youngest daughter of Kathe nad Leopold BECKER. Ida had worked as a secretary in
Kaiserlautern.
Ida and Arthur moved to Frankfurt/M. and had two children.
Arthur remained in the leather trade and established his own leather wholesale business in Offenbach
in 1927. The business prospered until Kristallnacht (1938) when the premises were demolished and looted.
Ida and Arthur soon left for England and then the US in April 1939.
Their immigration was sponsored by Fred GOLDNER of Nashville.

Sent to Leather Sellers Technical College in London in 1936 to learn the tanning trade.
Emigrated to US in 1938 sponsored by Fred GOLDNER of Nashville.
Worked in tanneries in Maine and New Jersey until he entered the US Army in 1942.
During World War 2 served as Military Police non-commissioned officer in various installations
throughout the US until discharge in March 1946.
Walter
first married and divorced [3.29] Steffi ROBERTS (anglicized from Steffi ROSENBAUM).
They moved from New York to Chciago in 1951 where he established a successful business as a sales representative
for various leather goods manufacturers. They had two children:

- [3.30] Ernest MAYERFELD (b. 19 Oct. 1925 Frankfurt/M.). Emigrated to England in December 1938.
Stayed with family friends one week before being reunited with his parent. They emigrated
to the US in April 1939. After high school in Brooklyn, Ernest worked as a clerk in a law firm until
being drafted into the US Army in March 1944.
Served as private in infantry and was slightly wounded near Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge on
Jan. 1945.
In June 1945, he reclaimed family house in Frankfurt.
Served out his military service with the US Army of Occupation until discharge in April 1946.
Ernest married (7 Nov. 1954) [7.31] Marilyn ERHLICH (b. 26 Aug. 1929
New York City), a fellow student
at Brooklyn College.
Ernest then got his BA and JD at the University of Michigan.
Worked for the Foreign Service of the US from 1951 to 1971 in Washington, Munich, Brussels,
Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zurich and Helsinki.
From 1975 to 1986, he worked as a lawyer for the C.I.A.
Private law practice in Washington DC.
Marilyn did graduate work in sociology at Columbia University and conducted social
research for the government and private institutions.
