Ernst was raised in a liberal, non-religious household. He studied Chemistry in Munchen, became a successful and celebrated Chemist, served as officer in the German army during World War I, and converted as a young man to Christianity.

Ernst Erich ESCALES studied chemistry like his father and at an early age became involved in technical and scientific publications. Later on he was very active in several industrial enterprises and in the field of chemistry. He founded a plastics periodical Kunstoffe. In 1934, when Ernst Erich ESCALES wanted to marry Gertraut, an active member of the Nazi party, whose father, a physician was colonel of the S.A. He could not provide the necessary papers showing he was an "Arian". Finally, in 1937 Ernst and Gertraut married in England and then returned to Germany. In 1943, Ernst was denounced by a business partner who wanted to take control of the business. After several months in prison, he was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. As a famous chemist, he was allowed to work and sleep in the laboratory in Block 50. He was freed in 1945 by the American army, but was unable to rehabilitate himself, and restore his life that he enjoyed prior to the war.
